Will somebody PLEASE answer!!!

I have now posted this query THREE times with no response
from anybody.
I have searched many pages of this newsgroup and there are
many other people out there with the SAME problem!! And
they did not get a response either.

I have copied the test from another users' problem posted
on Sept 5 below. MINE IS EXACTLY THE SAME.

"I am the site tech at a small office with 24-26 pcs. We
were hard hit by the blaster worm on all but one of our
networked laptops running W2K. On 3 of the 8-9 laptops,
Office 2000 uninstalled. I cannot say that this was a
definite result of the worm but it happened at the same
time. What happened with Office 2000 was none of the
applications will open and instructions say to install
it. When I try to install it, I get the message "this
patch package could not be opened. Contac the application
vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer
patch package." I have read MKBA #295823 and followed the
instructions to determine the version of the msi.dll file
and determined that it is 2.0and according to this, version
2 of the installer does not supported. I have tried
everything I know to do. Any help would be appreciated.
I have run the virus remove, I have installed the Windows
patch, I have tried to install the office updates and
discovered that they are allegedly already installed. I
have tried to uninstall Office but get the same patch
method with an addition, "verify that the patch exists or
is installed." Incidentally, I do have admin rights."

Will somebody PLEASE tell us how to fix this problem.

Hey Rod:

This might be too simple of ananswer but have you tried to
open Office in a safe mode? Although it sounds as if you
can't even get that far along in the program.
since you have so many PC's down it might be worth it to
pay MS the $100. bucks to have them help you trouble shoot
the problem by E-mail. They can check the systems
configuration of one unit which should give you a heads up
for the others.

Hope this helps :>)

Hi, Rod,

If you get the Windows Installer 2.0 SDK, you get MSIZAP2.0. This is what
you can run on WinXP machines AND other machines running Windows Installer
2.0.
It doesn't have a good UI, but a couple of folks have said it works great.

http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/

It's also available on your XP CD under

<drive>:\SUPPORT\TOOLS\support.cab

You'll need to extract it from the cab file. You can run msizap /? to get
the parameters for how it's used to remove Windows Installer data for
Office.

MsiZap needs to be run from DOS. Wherever you find MsiZap (the following is
from the Installer SDK), do the following:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDK\Bin>msizap t {Product ID}

Product ID mean the GUID. You might find it in a file in your TEMP
directory called something like "Office 2000 <edition>
Setup(####)_MsiExec.txt". If the TEMP directory is empty, you can find the
GUID using another method. Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
Click on the GUID folder numbers, and you should see a key called Display
Name. One of the folders will have MS Office as the display name, and the
folder number is your GUID. (You may also find it in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Registration\ )

Make sure you use the curly brackets when executing
msizap t {GUID}
You'll know it works when you see a stream of text fly up the screen.

Use this at your own risk; I've done it successfully once, and some other
people have, as well.
