Win Mail Import to Outlook 2007?

B

BearySarah

I am using Windows Mail/Vista. If I install Outlook 2007, when I import my
emails, settings etc, will it import all of my folders (I have a bunch) and
their email contents? It's about 2500 emails.

Will they import as labeled "Imported Folders" underneath the regular list
of folders?
Will I be able to drag and drop them into the regular folders section?
Or, am I going to have to recreate each folder separately, and then move the
contents of each folder from the Imported Folders section in to their new
folders that I've just created?

I had to do the recreation thing when I imported Outlook Express into
Windows Mail. It took hours. It would be great to not have to do that.
Thank you in advance.

BTW, there is a way to import the blocked senders list from Win Mail into
Outlook 2007. If anyone is interested, I'll post it.

B

BearySarah

No. After I install Outlook, I will import my Windows Mail stuff into
Outlook. Therefore, no reason to export anything. How about a serious
answer to my question? Anyone? Thank you in advance.

BearySarah

I'm sorry I phrased the Subject incorrectly. I have corrected my error in a
new post.

B

BearySarah

I do understand the implications of what I am doing. The fact is, you don't
export Win Mail to Outlook. You import WinMail into Outlook. I simply
worded the subject incorrectly. My first operating system was DOS 3.3 and
I've been migrating mail since Outlook Express 4. My switch from XP to Vista
was flawless. I'm pretty good at this. Outlook will be a new email client
to me. I needed information.

In other parts of the MS communities, I've received wonderful help and
answers to my questions. I didn't expect the nastiness I've recieved here.
DL, I hope you're proud of yourself.

And, by the way, no one has actually answered my questions.

And, if anyone needs to know how to import your blocked senders, saved
senders lists from Win Mail into Outlook. Figure it out yourself.
Obviously, dumb little me, who doesn't know the implications of miswording a
subject line, can't be of any help to anyone.

B

BearySarah

The reason it looks as if I don't know the difference between exporting and
importing is that I will be dealing with a new install of Outlook and using
Outlook to import my Win Mail data. Therefore, for me, there will be no
exporting. Period.

When you are asking for assistance/advice from strangers who are trying to
help, it may be a better stance to take the less abrasive approach to
responses.

Importing will lose your received dates on e-mails that you can only get
back by deleting all of your imported items and then export from Windows
Mail. Likewise, if you find that you need to reinstall your operating
system and need to restore your Outlook data, using import is also the
incorrect method to re-attach your data file to Outlook.

Import/export is only used to transfer non-native Outlook items to Outlook.
You export your mail and import your contacts. This goes for both Windows
Mail and Outlook Express.

Point taken. What got me upset was that it looked like the poster was simply
picking at my language choice. Had he explained why my language choice was
so important, I would have responded completely differently. Had I imported
rather than exported, I would have had 2500 emails dated with the date of
import. It would have been a mess.

If you could answer 2 more questions I would appreciate it.

1. The documentation from the MS Outlook backup addin says, "Each .PST file
contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and
Contacts."

What about the blocked senders list? I use it differently than most folks
and it is very important to me. Is that also included in the .pst file?

I found the registry key for the .iaf files so I'm okay for that.

2. I am very confused about exporting my contacts. That is an option in
Export in Win Mail. But, I read somewhere else here, that it's not possible
to export contacts because they won't end up right. What is the best way to
handle contacts?
Thank you in advance.

If the blocked senders list is in your rules, then yes, it will transfer
over. I am not terribly coversant with Windows Mail nor OE rules. I know
that OE rules can be moved to Outlook.

Transferring contacts is problematic if you use "groups" - a common use in
OE, as they are not recognized in Outlook. Outlook uses distribution lists,
not groups. Also, you may have problems exporting/importing sub-folders.
You would need to move them to the main contact folder to move them to
Outlook.

Thank you for your speedy reply. I found a way to export my blocked senders
list registry key to a text file, and clean it up so it can be directly
imported into Outlook.

One last question for the moment. What is included in the .pst file? Is it
absolutely everything?

When I backup my Win Mail, I have to create a new folder, copy the Windows
Mail folder into that folder, and then export IAM, Identities, and the
Windows Mail registry keys and place them into the new folder.

It just seems sort of weird that to backup Outlook, I only have to make a
copy of 1 folder. Thank you in advance.

I do understand the implications of what I am doing. The fact is, you
don't
export Win Mail to Outlook. You import WinMail into Outlook.

No you don't. You export them from within Windows Mail to Outlook and the
process will create your WIndows Mail folder tree within Outlook. If you
have messages in Inbox of Windows Mail, they'll be placed within the Inbox
of Outlook. The same for any other folder that's named the same as an
Outlook folder. Do NOT import them from within Outlook. All of the
received dates will change to be the date of import and you don't want that.
It is proper, however, to import your Windows contacts from within Outlook.
And, by the way, no one has actually answered my questions.

DL answered your question and his answer was correct.
And, if anyone needs to know how to import your blocked senders, saved
senders lists from Win Mail into Outlook. Figure it out yourself.
Obviously, dumb little me, who doesn't know the implications of
miswording a
subject line, can't be of any help to anyone.

I don't know if it's possib;le to export the Windows Mail blocked sender
list to a file (I think it's kept in the registry) but if you can, you
should be able to import the blocked senders with Actions>Junk E-mail>Junk
E-mail Options>Blocked Senders>Import from File.
