Win Word 2000 to Mac Word 2001 to Win Word 2000 -PROBLEM

Lee Smith

I'm having a problem with Word.

I'm using using Mac Word 2001 on OS 9.1.

I am given documents that were created in Win Word 2000. I edit and/or
update the formatting in Mac Word 2001. When the document goes back to
Win Word 2000, the formatting is messed up and the fonts are wrong. If
you click on the text, it lists the font as Univers which is correct but
it looks and prints as Courier (Win Word 2000).

What's the problem? Can't Win Word 2000 handle documents saved in Mac
Word 2001? Is there any way to fix this? I tried saving the document
as Word 6, but it looked even worse.....

Thanks.
Lee

Hi Lee:

Univers is a Mac font that has to be purchased and installed on the PC.
Macs do not support font embedding, so you will either have to package and
send them your copy of Univers or use a different font.

The reason it is printing in Courier is because they have the font
substitution set wrongly in their Tools>Compatibility options. In
Tools>Compatibility>Font Substitutions you can choose which individual font
is substituted for each unavailable font in a document. The defaults are
Times, Arial and Courier.

You should set the Compatibility Options for each document to be the latest
choice offered (Word 2000 on the PC). This enables all the latest features.
The settings are specific to the document, not to Word: you have to set in
each document.

Microsoft ships a set of fonts with Office. If you use these fonts in your
documents you will have a lot less problem with cross-platform work: they
were designed to solve this problem.

This is a pretty brief answer: get back to me if you need more.
Cheers
