Hi,
I am having problems receiving email into Outlook/Outlook
EXpress since downloading the Microsoft .NET Service Pack
1 update, via Windows Update on Monday 6 September 2004.
My environment:
Windows 98 (with all Critical Windows updates
applied)
Outlook Express 6
Outlook 97 (no service packs)
I always use Outlook 97 - I have been trying Outlook
Express 6 to test.
I access the internet via Internet Connection Sharing via
a second machine using a PPP dial-up modem connection
(also running Windows98)
There have been no changes to this environment (that I am
aware of) except for the download of the Service Pack on
Monday 6 September 2004.
Email has worked fine in this configuration for 3+ years.
Since downloading the Service Pack, everytime I have
tried to connect to my email, I get an error message
stating that Outlook 97 is unable to connect to the mail
server. I get the same error with Outlook Express.
I have gone through the following troubleshooting:
- I have tried to access the WWW via Internet Explorer
from MY machine => OK
- I have tried to access email from my Internet
Connection Sharing machine => OK
- I have used "winipcfg" to show my DNS setting and
confirm that all my
connections go via the ICS gateway machine, and that my
default gateway
is set.
- I have tried to access email from a machine via a
different dialup => OK
(Using Outlook Express 6)
- I have tried to ping my mail server from MY machine =>
OK
- I have tried to telnet to my mail servers POP daemon =>
OK
(telnet servername 110)
- I have tried rebooting my machine several times => NO
CHANGE
- I have tried deleting/recreating my Outlook 97 settings
=> NO CHANGE
- I have tried uninstalling the Microsoft .NET Service
Pack 1 => NO CHANGE
- I have searched through the Microsoft Support and
Troubleshooting databases
and have been unable to find anything to assist.
- There is no firewall software or firewall installed.
- I have used MSN Search to see if anyone has a similar
problem by searching
for issues related to "Outlook97" and "Connect"
or "Service Pack" or "Network"
I'd appreciate any ideas .. I'm staring down the barrel
at a reinstall
