Are you saving the files before closing?

Not sure what you mean by "multiple window panes" - are you talking
about

Window/Freeze Panes?
Splits?
Multiple windows into the same workbook?
Multiple workbooks, each in their own window?

Also not sure what you mean by "generic configurations"...
