Windows 2003 server & word 2004

J

Jerry Hart

I have a G4 powerbook running OS 10.3 with all the updates, and MS office
2004 for mac, again fully updated.

I have been working with a client recently and have been able to connect to
his win 2003 server without problems. Word files created & edited locally
on
my computer work fine, but I am working as part of a team and have now been
requested to edit files directly from their server. I can open & edit the
files without problems, except that after I save changes, other users
(windows users) can only open the files read only. It appears that the file
locks are not being released properly....or something....! Has anyone else
had similar problems? or is it something I have set incorrectly on my
machine? I am the only mac user in the group, so the clients IT dept has no
ideas.... All help gratefully appreciated!

Are you accessing the server using "Services for Macintosh" on the PC/AFP on
the Mac, or via Windows File Sharing on the PC/SMB on the Mac?

If AFP/SFM should work but has the old 31-char filename restrictions. Let us
know if this isn't the case.

WFS/SMB has an issue that goes all the way into the Mac OS File APIs that
you identified. Apparently Word is the only application that makes use of
these exclusive file locks, thus we got to find the bug. We're working with
Apple to find a solution on this. However can you get us more information
about how you are using these files?

Are you CLOSING the files before the other clients try to access them? Or
are you leaving them open on the Mac? Etc..
