Windows 7 installed Word documents won't open

I installed Windows 7 this past weekend.
I received an email with a word document attached. The attachment will not
open. I get a "An error occurred sending the command to the application".
I did not have this problem with Vista.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Office and that did nothing.
