windows 98-word error

Everytime I try to open WORD, I get an error, "This
program has performed an illegal operation and will shut
down." I tried to reinstall but it keeps telling me "Setup
could not open file," "It is in use by another
application." I'm totally baffled! Does anyone know how to
solve this problem?

FWIW, reinstalling rarely helps since it doesn't overwrite Normal.dot or the
Registry or remove add-ins from Word's Startup folder, and these are the
three primary causes of problems. See
