Windows disappering in Word, and Excel

Has this ever happend to you?
You start up your machine and double click on an
application such as WORD and it open's for just a few
seconds, and then immediately closes. There are no error
messages, and the event viewer does not display an event.

Has anyone ever seen this problem before. I am running
Windows XP on a new IBM T-40 laptop with a full install
of Office 2000 SP3.
