Windows Explorer, Word, Excel hang browsing file system

On 12 April 2006 my XP SP2 system automatically downloaded and installed a
set of Windows XP updates comprising KB911565, KB912812, KB890830, KB911562,
KB908531. Since installing these updates Windows Explorer, Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Excel all fail to browse the file system or open files. The
programs all hang ("not responding") and have to be terminated via CTRL ALT
DEL. Both the Microsoft Windows and Office Web sites report that I have all
the appropraie updates installed. Non Microsoft programs and some Microsoft
programs (eg Microsoft Money) seem to work fine.
