Windows hangs on pasting into Word

Hello,
I'm having a major problem with Word at the moment and would
appreciate any help. On pasting a Visio drawing into Word, Windows hangs
and I need to reboot. Saving as a .tif and trying to Insert | Picture |
From File also results in Windows hanging. However I can paste into Paint
without any problem (although I tried Excel, and that hangs Windows too). I
can paste text into Word quite happily. On opening an existing file which
contains drawings Windows hangs as soon as I try to scroll down. I have
tried creating an equation in Word, and I can insert / edit the equation,
but Windows hangs when I click away from it.

I've reinstalled Office to no effect. I have Word 2002 (10.2627.3501) SP-1
running on Windows 2000 Pro Version 5.0 (Build 2195: SP2). This problem
started when Windows hung on booting and I had to uninstall my AV (AVAST4)
to get it up and running again. So the two problems might well be related.

A glance at the Application Log shows that I am getting warnings at around
the time Windows is hanging.

EventID: 1015
Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x800401F0

If anyone can give me a clue how to fix this I'd be very grateful. I
scanned for viruses before closing down last night, and I scanned using
Adaware and Spybot both last night and today and found nothing suspect.
Thanks.

Firstly I'd recommend a good cleanup because after the problems you have
experienced, there will be masses of abandoned temp files littering your
hard drive. You may also have a corrupt sector on your drive that occurred
during the initial problem. See the following FAQ for help with this:

My personal preference using Visio diagrams in Word is to create the diagram
in Vision and save it as a Vision Drawing. Then use SaveAs and save it again
as a GIF file. In Word, use Insert, Picture, From File and insert the GIF.
It seems to work well and keeps the file size down.
