Windows Installer Dialog Box Pops Up Briefly

I am running Win XP SP3. I did not try to uninstall or install MS office 2003
pro lately however whenever I start one of the office programs now the
Windows Installer Dialog box pops up briefly and then disappears before the
office program launches. Although the box disappears it is preventing me from
opening files by directly clicking on the icon and the settings of my word
program have now changed. How do I get this to stop popping up?
