Windows Installer

I found a serious flaw in Windows Installer 2.0 while
trying to fix a problem in Office XP. I applied the last
series of Office XP updates several weeks ago. After that
I had to do a system restore that went beyond the date I
applied the Office Updates. I found that whenever I try to
use a feature in Office XP such as Help or fix and repair,
Windows Installer begins to run, but shows this message
This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the
patch package exists and that you can access it, or
contact the application vendor to verify that this is a
valid Windows Installer patch package. I found that I
cannot use the Office auto update feature, or manually
apply any updates as the Installer is apparentrly looking
for a patch package that is missing. I cannot find a fix
on Microsoft's website as all of their fixes for this
problem will not work with Windows Installer 2.0. I cannot
find a 2.0 download for XP as XP came preloaded with the
2.0 version. Seems to be a real Catch 22. If I can't find
a solution, I'll have several hundred dollars worth of
worthless Office XP (Which I happen to like) Any help will
be greatly appreciated. Using XP Pro Version 5.1 build
2600 xpsp2 Service pack 1 Office XP (2002 Version 10)

It isn't just XP friend. The problem is bigger than that. There are many
people complaining because they are in the same boat. I have Win 2000
and Office 2000 and am hosed. I didn't discover these problems until
after I had done several system backups beyond where the problem
occurred. So now I cannot update, I cannot go back and I cannot
uninstall Office. And you are right about Installer 2.0. Once you get to
Installer 2.0 you are screwed the way things are now. Our only hope is
that MS figures this out and comes up with a patch to fix this debacle.

I found this discussion looking for help to this
problem. I have office xp sbe. After adding a new drive
and making it the master, none of the .msp files are
present. I believe from the knowledge base that this is
causing me trouble updating and loading office software.
Has anyone contacted microsoft about this? Thanks, Patty

I submitted a report several days ago. It wouldn't hurt if other people
would also. The more the merrier......
