Windows Journal has no toolbar icons for "Insert Text Box" or "Insert Picture"

For the life of me, I cannot understand why Windows Journal does not
have a "Insert Text Box" or "Insert Picture" icon in the toolbar.

I can use the "Insert Menu ... Textbox".

However, I know for a fact this is poor design.
Why ?

Microsoft says so.

In the real Office 12 apps (ie. not OneNote), there is a migration away
from drop down Menus (because no one can use them) to " Ribbons".
These are easily viewable, easy clickable buttons.

Tablet Users will benefit from this. Word might be even better on a
tablet with this new Office 12 interface.

However, the apps that need it the most are
(1) OneNote
(2) Windows Journal

I am very surprised that OneNote 1.5/2.0/"12" will not have the
Ribbons.

But could someone who helps develop Windows Journal please add a
"Insert Text Box" icon to the toolbar. It is sorely needed.

Logic Error #2 in Windows Journal.

When I click on the "Black INK" box to start inking in the colour
black, it doesnt always switch to black ink.

Forinstance, if I just used the lasso to Cut and Paste some text, then
I click on the Black Ink icon, I expect to be able to ink in black.
However, I must first click the INK button.

It makes no sense. What am I going to do Lasso in black ?

Clicking on the Black Ink button *ALWAYS* means I want to use black
ink.

Windows Journal is designed for Tablet PC use as a simple example of Ink
(handwriting) usage, not to be a super application nor a replacement for any
other Office application. It will not be changing much, if any, in the
Office 12 time frame. Not all Office applications will utilize the
"ribbon," including OneNote.

You should probably ask in ms.public.windows.tabletpc. This group is for
OneNote and the OneNote team doesn't do Journal.

OneNote doesn't really need it - that's one reason why it doesn't have it.
Word (and Excel and a few others) got the new UI because there are more than
1800 commands in Word. The number of menus, toolbars and task panes in Word
had become absurdly unwieldy. In fact, of the top 10 feature requests
Microsoft receives for Word several of them were things already in the
product...just that people couldn't find them because there were way too
many commands for the old interface to be discoverable. OneNote doesn't
have that many commands yet so the new UI isn't necessary.
I am very surprised that OneNote 1.5/2.0/"12" will not have the
Ribbons.

The OneNote team had a choice: they could add new features or change to an
interface it doesn't need. If they had chosen the interface at the expense
of features you'd be complaining that they changed the interface but didn't
add enough new features.
But could someone who helps develop Windows Journal please add a

Like I said, you should post this in a group where Journal is supported.
The OneNote team doesn't do Journal.

I feel OneNote would benefit from the new interface. On a tabletPC,
menus are suboptimal choices. Having most key choices in a clickable
ribbon would facilitate quicker navigation.

Your rationale of "OneNote doesnt have 1800 menu items like Word" for
the reason OneNote will not include the new Office UI seems illogical.
First off, Word will not "ribbonize" all 1800 menu items. Secondly, if
OneNote doesnt have "tonnes of menu items" then it would stand that a
ribbon for OneNote would be just alot cleaner/nicer than a Word Ribbon.
The idea that OneNote does not have a ton of shortcuts would also
facilitate a ribbon.

Perhaps, but not not as much as it will benefit from new features.

First off, Word will not "ribbonize" all 1800 menu items.

Just wait until you see it. Then it may seem more clear. Microsoft's
Jensen Harris has a good blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh/) in which he
talks about a lot of the design decisions that went into the new UI for
Office.

A ribbon for OneNote would just look somewhat sparse. Ultimately it came
down to priorities and new features won out over an interface upgrade that
wasn't really necessary.
