Windows Live Mail vs Outlook

It seems Windows Live Mail's Contact list is not quite what I would
like. Especially troublesome is the apparent lack of the ability to
synchronize with third party programs.

What might be my choices? Outlook? a better understanding of Live
Mail? a better understanding of my other programs I would like to play with
Live Mail?

extensions and add ons like a calendar and multiple signatures. It's free.
