Windows Mail Default client

Hi,

I am unable to send an e-mail through the IE7 or click on some links in my
e-mail. I know that when I go into Tools and then Options, down at the
bottom I have the option of making it my default messaging programs.
Unfortunately, for some reason it is greyed out and I cannot set it as my
default client. I have windows Vista and this is the first thing that has
stumped me. Assistant would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
