WIndows ME- Word 2000-UNABLE TO OPEN WORD DOCS

PLEASE CAN ANYBODY HELP?
I HAVE WINDOWS ME INSTALLED WITH WORD 2000, ON ATTEMPTING
TO OPEN A WORD DOCUMENT THE HOUR GLASS HANGS AND THE WORD
DOCUMENT DOES NOT OPEN. I HAVE PRESSED ALT DEL + SPR AND
A MESSAGE SAYING WINWORD ERROR APPEARS.
THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE AND I HAD TO COMPLETLY WIPE THE
COMPUTERS HARD DRIVE, AND REINSTALL EVERY THING AGAIN.
I WOULD PREFER NOT TO HAVE TO DO THIS AGAIN - PLEASE HELP
