Windows ME

I cannot open any file in the control panel, etc. When I
attempt to open the message that comes up: "windows cannot
access the specified device, path, file. You may not have
appropriate permission to access."
I have tried restore but can only go back to Dec 31 which
is of no help.

You should ask your question in a newsgroup devoted to Windows ME. This one
is for Access, the database product.

You'll likely find it under the Windows area.

Hi Linda,

This newsgroup is dedicated to Microsoft Access, the database software. You might have
better luck posting your question to a newsgroup devoted to Windows ME (or ditching
Windows ME in favor of Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional).

Have you been keeping your system updated with all the security patches? Do you have
antivirus software with up-to-date definition files? Do you have a firewall (either
software or hardware based)? If not, your troubles may very well be related to an attack
of your system.
