Make a simple "audio box" (kind of like the XBOX) that has a basic CD-drive
and enough "Windows capability" to run Windows Media Player. It would need
real audio "jacks" (connections) so it can be hooked-up as an "AUX" to to a
stereo or AV receiver. Then, I could rip CD's to the Windows Media Library
and "play" the music from this box instead of having to dig-through my CD
collection or set-up an elaborate home network to play audio (that resides on
a remote PC) through my large living-room speakers. Obviously, it would need
a video/monitor connection (small size LCD displays are cheap) and a network
card so it could receive Windows Media Updates and get info from the web. It
is basically a stripped-down PC -- and you could get crreative with the
packaging. Of course, there are some complications with media ownership B.S.
and you'd want to make it easy to transfer the music I've purchased on-line
from an existing PC to this machine -- but the point is... there needs to be
a simple way to consolidate all the WMA files into a central repository in
order to play music on my "main" system. I know you can rig something up
with a wireless (or wired) network and some special hardware, but it seems
like a pain and I wonder about the fidelity. Microsoft should take the lead
on this. I think you'd sell a lot of these units and they need not be overy
complex or expensive. if not, you guys should publish the "white paper" that
describes the best way to set something like this up.
