windows messenger 5.0 accessing hotmail automatically

I use windows xp-home. Windows messenger used to pop-
up in the lower right corner and announce any new email
in my hotmail account. Now is does not. I have no idea
what I need to do to get it to start working again. Any
suggestions appreciated.
