Using Windows XP on high end stand alone laptop with Outlook 07 enterprise
with BCM all latest updates ...

I am getting the error dialog "Windows Search Protocol Host has encountered
a problem and needs to close." randomly, when using Outlook 07 with
BCM…there does not seem to be any pattern. Any ideas to solve this?

I don't know the direct fix, but you could (1) try running Windows
Update. I think there was an update for WDS recently. And (2) running
Outlook once As Administrator (right click on the Outlook icon). That
fixes some problems with Outlook MAPI stores, which WDS indexes.

I am having the EXACT same problem.

That darn Search Protocol Host error pops up over and over again even when I
click on the option to send the report.

I'm about to uninstall the whole thing but I have all my contacts there.

I have the same problem and I don't have BCM installed. I tried uninstalling
and re-installing WDS with no success.
