Windows Slow to List .MSG files saved to network folder

Hi,

We run Outlook 2000 on XP or W2k3 and one team save messages from Outlook to
the file system.

We are seeing that when they look at the folder windows is very slow to show
the contents - it "thinks" before it shows the envelope icon next to each
file. Its "thinks" longer for larger files.

Anyone explain what is going on?? Used systinternals tools and nothing is
standing out.

Folder with 100 files. All Word docs or MSG files. Soon as you go in you see
the word doc file icons, but it goes down the list and thinks before showing
each envelope icon. You can open the file before the icon shows and thats
OK.

I've seen messages about stopping explorer from gathering extra info on
certain file types - like AVI. Does the same thing apply here.

Outlook 2003 does something similar...

All ideas gratefully received.

Thanks,

Daniel..

I had the same problem.

I don't know why it is but I've fudged around it...
Open up Windows Explorer
Select Tools-> Folder Options
Select File Types tab
Find the definition for 'MSG' and delve into using the Advanced button
Note the operations (open & print) and their definition (use Edit to view)
When you've copied it all down (best to just cut & paste into notpad)
DELETE the defintion for MSG!
Now create your own....
Hit New
Enter 'MSG' as the File Extension then hit OK.
Locate the new MSG defintion and use th Advanced button to add back in your
operation. You'll probably want to change the icon too.
If this doesn''t work for you you can delete it and add back in the proper
defintion for msg by
Hit New
Enter 'MSG' as the File Extension then hit OK.
Select Advanced an associate the extension with Outlook item.
All done

Jeff
