Windows Update and Office Update Not Linked

Windows XP Update detects Office 2003 and installs Office 2003 Service Packs
(in this case Office SP2). If the user subsequently uses the update function
from within Office (under the Help menu), Office tries to install SP2 and
fails. This does not seem to cause a problem, but could confuse a novice
user. It also seems that, while Windows can update Office, it does so
inconsistently. At times it fails to identify minor Office updates. When
Windows does update Office, it apparently leaves no code whereby Office
Update can recognize a specific Office installation has been updated.

Bottom line is that Windows Update and Office Update don't know what the
other is doing!

I also discovered that Windows Update (now Microsoft Update) doesn't know
when Office updates are installed via the Office Update site instead of the
Microsoft Update site. If you check your download history--updates from the
Office site don't show up. I just discovered this when I couldn't get the
Office 2003 Service Pack to install successfully using the automatic updates
option. After I did an office repair, I had to go to the Office update site
to get the Service Pack to install successfully. And, I also discovered that
I needed to be at the Office Update site to find out why the installation was
failing. The Microsoft site would not give any details to explain the
installation failure.
