windows update scan isnt moving?

James Walker Wind update

Have gone through start menu up to windows update.
Clicked on - scan for updates.
After 10 minutes no percentage has moved!
Running on ME.
Can anyone help please?
Dont know too much about computers - so easy language on a reply please.
