PLEASE MAKE THIS EASYIER FOR ALL OF US BILL.
For what it's worth.
I have notice the very vague (MSP) patch file installation
or problem URL for updates. Your mileage may very but
here's what I have learn.
You can download a utility called Windows Installer
Cleanup from Microsoft. The Utility mciuu.exe allows one
to clean the registry of any application using the windows
installer program. For instance one could remove the
Office 2000 registry entries pertaining to the Office.
After doing this you would need to reinstall the Office
product or application you removed from the registry.
Once you have successfully installed the product you could
then return to the Office "Check for updates" screen and
download the updates. This has worked for me a couple of
times. Other issues I discovered that if the patch (MSP)
files associated with the path where installed remotely
from say an network drive you will receive an error
message stating you do not have Admin rights are you
windows installer version has change or your MSP files are
missing. In this scenario the above process worked
great. Download the msicuu.exe for NT /Win2K OS or the
mcicu.exe for 95,98 or WinMe utility to remove your
Office, reinstall, then update. This process has worked
on several pc I have supported. The final issue is if the
windows Update fails and Installation was unsuccessful but
you are given a browse option then copy the Service
release contents cd to your local hard drive. Tell
windows using the browse option to look in for the service
release cd. This process works around the in-ability of
the Microsoft Office update page not being able to write
to the service release CD_ROM.
Like I said your mileage may very. Keep in mind you will
need the Application DISK.
Oh to determine your installer
type
msiexec.exe and click on version.
