windows word replaces characters by @

In documents created in Word X (mac) and opened in Word 2000 (pc) some
characters are replaced by @: specially this happens with =/ (unequal) and
= (greater than or equal), but also unexpected: r) is replaced by @@. Is
there a solution to this problem?

Josje:

There is a solution, but not a good one.

The cause of the problem is that Word on the Mac is restricted only to the
Mac International Character Set. This means it uses special characters in
special fonts to produce rare characters.

On the PC, Word is using the standard Unicode character set, which we will
get in the next version of Mac Word. Until you upgrade to Word 2004 on the
Mac, you will get this problem.

Perhaps the simplest way around it is to correct the characters on the PC,
then IGNORE what appears on the Mac. The characters from the PC will remain
in the document, and they will display and print correctly on the PC, and
they will be correct in Word 2004.

However, the characters that display on the Mac are often incorrect, because
Mac Word X and below cannot handle Unicode.

Hope this helps
