Windows XP and older versions of Office

Mike Miller

I recently upgraded to Windows XP Pro, but still use
Office 97. Whenver I open a DOC or XLS file, I get an
error stating the file is already open, do I want to make
a copy? I know the file is not already open. This does
not happen when opening PPT files, or MPP files with
Project 2000.

Any thoughts on what is causing this? I did not have this
problem under Windows 98.

Hi Mike,

If this occurs when you open Office documents outside of the
application, rather than using File/Option, then it could be that your
file associations need to be recreated. Go to Start/Run and run the
following:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.
