Windows XP - Office 2003 SP2 does not install

Despite disabling Norton, Office 2003 SP2 does not install. All my software
is authentic and Windows update configured to "Express" install as
recommended. This is the only update that has had this problem.

Manually download and install the larger Office 2003 Service Pack 2 file
(Office2003SP2-KB887616-FullFile-ENU.exe). See links below for more information.

When you try to install Office 2003 Service Pack 2, you receive a "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by
the windows installer service" error message, or the Setup program may not be completed, and you do not
receive notification

I did a repair from the original Office CD and the SP2 installed fine. I'm
assuming it rolls up all the interim updates - anyone know?

Yes, Service Pack 1 is installed with Service Pack 2.

This means that you will not need to install Service Pack 1 to then install Service Pack 2.

Seems like MS has run into difficulties with sp2! Download goes dead slow today

That has nothing to do with Office 2003 Service Pack 2 itself.

It is just the fact that so many are downloading it, their servers are slowing down.


Microsoft really needs some mirrors for their download center.

If Microsoft Update had run smoothly, no recommendation would have been
issued about the "full" install of sp2 and thus the number of downloads would
have been less and the speed higher...

By the way, the full install worked without any problems... but the
Microsoft update one did not work even after me having reinstalled the MOP
2003 in its entirety. I wonder if there is a single installation that has
been successfully installed from the Microsoft update installation pack?
