Windows XP Problem Exporting Tables

I am using Access 97 in Windows XP. Whenever I try to export a table into
Excel I get the following message:
"Can't Update. Database or Object is Read Only". The same databases work
perfectly on another computer running Windows 98.

Can anybody suggest a way round this problem, please?
