Windows XP SP2 and FP 2003

M

Mack 007

I am thinking about installing WinXP SP2 on my home PC which I mostly use
for development works.
Any web applications I develop, uses ASP and first developed and tested on
this PC before publishing it on the net.
I also use InterDEV for development.

This PC has IIS and FP 2002 extensions installed. Also, a SQL server 2000
desktop edition.
Has one NIC connected to my cable modem. I use hosts file to define
sitenames hosted on my PC.
I do NOT use 127.0.0.1 for IP, Instead, I use my NIC IP address and
configure IIS accordingly.

The last time I installed SP2, I had some weired problems like internal
sites not loading in FP and ASP pages not loading.

I know some articles related to this issue on various website. I am not
convinced.

Now, again, I really like to install windows XP SP2. Do you think that I
will face the same problem again. Is anybody here using the same setup like
me and have windows XP SP2 installed. Is your FP 2003 gives trouble in
loading your local sites for editing.?

I am not having any problems with or without any Windows XP SPs:

3 Windows XP Pro SP2 workstations
(prior to Christmas 2004, 2 workstation were running Windows XP Home SP2)

1 Windows 2003 Standard server w/IIS 6.0

Each machine has/runs:

1 NIC connects to Cable Router and uses a Dynamic IP Address
1 NIC connects to LAN Router and uses a static IP Address
Host file for connecting to internal IPs
Windows Firewall Application
MS Anti-Spyware

1 Workstation has IIS 5.1 installed with FP2000 extensions for use with FP2002 and FP2003, but can
connect to IIS 6 under Windows 2003 Server when needed.

2 Workstation work directly with IIS 6 under Windows 2003 server. I use FP2000 (I have no need for
any of the added features in FP2002 or FP2003) for all development work.

Forgot to mention, that all installs of Windows XP Pro were clean installs, and then updated via
Windows Update for SP1, SP1a, then SP2 and all the other updates in-between each. As I reformat my
workstations at least once a year.

Installing SP1, SP1a is not necessary as SP2 contains all the previous SPs.
Or, am I misunderstanding you?

No you are not misunderstanding. I never skip Windows service packs.

When you install SP1, other updates are then installed, then when you install SP1a, other updates
are then installed, and then when you install SP2, other updates are installed. It does appear that
SP2, remove all prior updates, at least prior updates no longer appear in the Add/Remove Program
list.

This way I know that my machines has all the required updates in the order released, plus I can roll
back to a prior SP during the process.

Okay, whatever cranks your tractor.
It is not necessary to install previous service packs. But, if you feel
good about it, then do so ;-)

I may not be necessary, but it does ensure that a user will not miss any updates that are loaded as
a result of installing each of the individual service packs. That can not truly be known, if just
installing SP2.

Plus along the way, I was presented with Hardware drive updates.

As a Computer Club volunteer, I have installed SP2 on dozens of member's
computers. Some have never installed any updates since they bought the
machine (on a dial up connection). The only problem resulted on a machine
that had the hard drive partitioned into 2GB drives and that was not the
fault of sequence of installation.

OK, now I have formated the hard disk and did clean install from WinXP (SP1)
CD. No supected adware or malware. I am using Norton AV 2005 and Zone Alarm
Pro firewall. Visual Studio 6 with SP 6 is installed. No other special
programs except SQL server Desktop Edition is installed.

Based on the comments here, I take it a green signal to go ahead. I am now
starting to installed SP2 from Windows Update.

Will update soon!

Uninstall Norton and Zone Alarm until you have installed SP2

Forgot to mention, that all installs of Windows XP Pro were clean installs, and then updated via
Windows Update for SP1, SP1a, then SP2 and all the other updates in-between each. As I reformat my
workstations at least once a year.

Drive Image is the best investment I've ever made in a PC.

But restoring a drive image, is not doing a clean install.

The only problem I have ever had was with the NVIDIA driver from Windows Update, which I run every
Friday, solve that issue a couple weeks ago.

OK, All done. I even visited Windows Update again and updated everything.

The main problem now I am facing is, I cannot open a site hosted on PC
(on the hosts file, the entry is 10.0.0.10 TESTSITE) in Frontpage 2003.
Its is asking for a password. But, it doesn't even accept administrator
password.

What can I do?

Did you re-install IIS and the FP2000 extensions?
