Windows XP SP2 and Outlook XP

Hi all. I have searched the web and this site
extensively and have not been able to find my answer.

We are getting ready to deploy Windows XP SP2 (either an
upgrade to Windows XP SP1 or a brand new build of Windows
XP SP2) with the firewall turned off and the Windows
Firewall and ICS service disabled. During our testing,
however, we have noticed an issue with Outlook XP - when
a machine is upgraded to XP SP2, messages don't seem to
appear in outlook right away - there is some delay. Even
though we don't have the firewall turned on or the ICS
service started, I added an exception for outlook.exe and
still experienced the problem. We have noticed that
Outlook 2003 running on Windows XP SP2 DOES NOT
experience this problem. That being said, we as a firm
are not ready to upgrade to outlook or office 2003.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue and if so, how did
you get around it?

Thanks.

Jeff

I haven't experienced this, but there is a registry key for Outlook 2002
called forcepolling that might get around this. Office XP/Outlook 2002 has
to be at SP1 or greater to use the registry key mentioned in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;839226&sd=RMVP (it
is a per user setting).

Outlook 2003 doesn't suffer or need this key because logic is built-in that
if it never receives the UDP event from the Exchange server, it
automatically switches to polling.

FWIW, the polling cycle is every 60 seconds by default. So depending on
your network structure, the increase in network activity might be felt.

So I have a question for you. Does your site disable the use of NETBios
over TCP/IP (e.g. No WINS.)
