Windows xp works address book mail merge problems

I've been trying for days to take my address book and
mail merge a set of mailing labels. I follow the wizard
exactly and have also tried using the icons and going to
tools and following inx. there. My computer company help
line said they've gotten numerous complaints on this and
microsoft, of course, won't address the issue without a
credit card number. Does someone know of a "fix" or
should I just give up? Thanks for any help...
