Thanks, Russ. Yes, this was one of the main sites thrown up by Google
and
which puzzled me. Firstly, under the section "To send a fax" on that
page,
"Select File | New | Fax Message or Actions | New Fax Message".
Well,
wherever I look there's nothing relating to fax under any of the drop-down
submenus under "File" or anything else; furthermore, the Actions drop-down
menu box is empty. Similarly, "Click Send when you have completed
the
fax."- well, there's no "Send" button on toolbars or "Send" options in
drop-down menus or "Send" under the toolbar customisation settings.
It's really strange.
I have Office loaded on my other bootable partition (also Windows 98SE)
and
I have a spare hard drive also with Office on. I am going to have a look
at those other 2 installations over the weekend and see if they have
identical discrepancies. If not, I could uninstall and reinstall
Office; if, however, they are similarly flawed, I will have a look around
for a free basic fax program.
Thanks again for your kind help.
Martin

Thanks Russ. I accept it's quite possible I just don't know how to
send
a fax or I'm missing the "bleeding obvious" step. Nevertheless, here
is
the information:
O.S. = Windows 98SE
Outlook 2000 SP3 9.0.0.6627 installed from my own original Microsoft
cds
fully licensed and registered - bought by me from PC World.
E-mail service option is set to Internet Only.
In getting the details for you, I saw that the Symantec Fax was
connected
to
LAN (TOOLS>Accounts>mail tab). I tried changing it to "Connect
using
my
phone line" but it trips back to "Connect using my LAN". So I then
checked
the box underneath: "Connect via modem if the LAN is not available" so
it
now shows as "LAN/Dial up" connection on the mail tab in Internet
Accounts.
I thought that might be the problem but it still does not work.
This is what I have tried to do:
METHOD ONE
1. Opened Outlook 2000.
2. With the window titled "Personal Folders - Microsoft Outlook", I
dropped
the File submenu from the toolbar and selected "New".
3. I expected to see "Fax" or "New Fax" in the list, but there is
nothing
related to fax.
4. Similarly, in the Actions submenu, I expected (after some Google
research) to possibly see a fax option, but there is nothing in the
Actions
submenu, just an empty box.
* * *
*
METHOD TWO
I then discovered the FAX Wizard in New Office Document in the
Office
toolbar (then Letters and Faxes tab). On double clicking the FAX
Wizard:
1. Word opens with the Fax wizard embedded.
2. On finishing the wizard, the Word page shows the word FAX with a
dialogue
box that says "Send fax now", which I press.
3. There's a click or 2 from the speakers (modem is not in use but no
dialling sounds heard).
4. Box pops up to say "The wizard has finished sending your document"
at
which point I click the OK button (not that I believe it!).
5. Microsoft Outlook then automatically opens up together with a
window
titled "Untitled - FAX (Plain Text)". Under the tool bar of this
window
it says "This message has not been sent". There's a "To", a "cc"
and a
"subject" window and the Word cover sheet appears as an attachment
at
the
bottom under the message area of the box. The toolbar along the top
has
menus: File Edit View Insert Format Tools Actions and Help.
Based
on
what I read on Google, I then expected to see a Send button or a
Send
option
under the File submenu or Action submenu. But there is no Send
option.
I've been through the toolbar customisation commands to see if there is
anything that might function as a Send option but there's nothing.
The Help menu is of no help whatsoever, but that's nothing new.
Apologies if, as I suspect, I am missing some blindingly obvious step.
If you haven't spotted what I'm doing wrong don't worry: I'll give
it
up
as
a bad job and I'll have a root through CNET etc for a reliable free
fax.
Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply.
Martin
This application almost never worked even with the Office versions and
operating systems of 6 years ago (for which it was designed).
What operating system are you using? How did you install the
application?
Verify your Outlook version and mail support mode. Provide more detail
on
how you are sending the fax and what happens.

For the first time I tried to send a fax through Outlook 2000 but
without
success. Winfax appears to be installed; for example, by
printing,
in
Word, to Symantec fax starter edition a window called "Untitled-FAX
(plain
text)" appears, but there's no Send button or option.
Nevertheless,
OLFaxMOD amd Wfxmsrvr appear in ctrl-alt-del but not a great deal
else
happens.
I have also tried the fax wizard in Office tools and that appears to
work
but all I get is a couple of clicks from the modem. The
Winfax/modem
wizard had been worked through satisfactorily.
This may well be significant: when I open Outlook there is
nothing
in
the
Actions tab just an empty box. And, also, when I open Outlook and
select
the menu File>New, there is nothing relating to fax in there (ie no
"New
fax
message") - as a trawl with Google led me expect to see.
I have run the Outlook detect and repair function.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
