WinFax

My recently acquired Office Outlook 2003 opens, but functions very slowly
with frequent "not responding". An error message led me to the Symantec site
with the message "Outlook 2003 stops responding when accessing WinFaxPRO
10.02 or 10.03"

What's the fix?

It's a known bug in the error reporting tool. It's been reported to MS a
while ago but we haven't heard anything back on when or if it will be fixed
or what's really the matter.

About all I can suggest is to run Detect and Repair from the Help menu, then
if you still have the problem start up Outlook in safe mode using the /safe
switch and see if it improves.

Open Start, Run and type:

outlook.exe /safe

Then press Enter. See what happens with no addins running. You also might
want to try the /cleanviews switch:

outlook.exe /cleanviews

Thanks. I recently tried the Repair under Help, but each time it slowly did
an Office Install without any apparent improvement.

See if an addin is causing the problem by starting in safe mode. Other than
that I have no suggestions since there's been no feedback from MS on what's
causing the problem or how to fix it.

Well, this has been an issue since December 06 at least. It looks like MS is
not going to fix this, especially since it balames Symantec and most won't go
through the trouble to realize it's just another Microsoft bug.

And how do you know they are not going to fix this problem? How high on the list of bugs do you know this is for fixing? Please enlighten us.

Because after 3 months of a known issue on a major product, if it hasn't been
addressed by now, the fix will be to upgrade to 07.

But for those interested in what I have found regarding the problem as
opposed to my distaste for Microsoft, here goes......

The PC was a Dell laptop with XP pro / SP2 and Outlook03 - no Winfax, but I
was using Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate.

The client was an attorney who did not like to follow instructions. He was
leaving town for a 3 month trial. So I removed the Anti-Virus SW that was
managed by the server and installed an updated version (10.1) in an unmanaged
configuration to allow the PC to do live updates while he is away from the
office. This is when the problem started for me. He reported the problem the
next day. I went to his office and never was able to duplicate the problem,
even though he said it was consistent.

So I dialed into his computer when he was outside the office and I found his
Outlook was still online and disconnected. (and still trying to access
Exchange although there was no way it would ever find it.) So I changed his
Outlook to Offline mode (his profile was set to ignore Exchange in offline
mode and only get his pop email) This seemed to solve his problem.

So if you are using Exchange - make sure you go to offline mode when you
cannot access the Exchange Server. See if that does anything for anybody.
(BTW - if this is truly the fix then it is more operator error than a MS
problem. However, I still think Outlook is poorly written.

So far they don't have enough crash data to reproduce the issue, so that's
why it hasn't been fixed yet. When I originally reported the issue I sent in
the bit bucket and crash report and I've been following up ever since at
about 2 week intervals. They are looking at trying to fix the problem
though.

FWIW - the problem has come back.

Since this is a critical user, I guess I will have to format and reload the
whole thing - hey - what's another 4 hours. I guess that's the upside with
Microsoft, billable hours. Unfortunately at the expense of the engineers
being able to apply proper fixes.

I get the same Winfax pro error (can not access Outlook even in safe mode and
have uninstalled and reinstalled several times) I suspect the only thing
left to do is to reformat. Not to sound like the village idiot, but how do I
crash my system and reinstall? I really need my Outlook back and I am not
willing to buy Office 2007 as a fix for the problem, since I'm not convinced
this would correct the issue. (PS I do not have Winfax installed, but do
have symantic security software on this computer.
