winmail.dat files attached

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: imap I keep receving winmail.dat files as attatchements. for example, JPEG files or .xls files from some clients come over as winmail.dat files....I can not open or do anything with them....why?
