winmail.dat

I have received an email with an attachment called winmail.dat.

Even if I open the email with 'Mail' the attachment is the same.

In fact the attachment is a MS Word file from a PC, that correctly opens in Outlook.

Why does Entourage and Mail not open this file?

I receive many of these attachments as part of my duty day and it i imperative that I can open these files.

Have a look at this page on The Entourage Help Page

Hope this helps!

Thanks. Sadly, 'TNEF's Enough' does not work with Leopard!!

Why on earth does Microsoft release an app that cannot read data sent from another equivalent Microsoft app?

The only reason I can think of is that they want to force people to
the PC. It's either that or they are lazy. They have the code in
Outlook, it should be simple to bring to Entourage.

No, they would rather make you look stupid to the Outlook users by
telling them to change the way they send email. The problem is, most
PC users have trouble figuring out how to fix it, nor do they care
since 'they' don't have the problem.

Just another reason not to upgrade to 2008.

It certainly would appear that way.

Why do your last comment about 2008? As far as I am away 2004 did not read the files either.

Hardly a conspiracy of any sorts... The reality is that a vast majority of
e-mail sent by folks doesn't come in this format. Yes, some folks haven't
moved to more modern versions of e-mail such as, say, HTML. Our choices are
either to invest in building support for a dying e-mail format or go build
other features of value to folks. We chose the later.

Sound all good sensible stuff.

So why didn't you remove this antiquated email format from Outlook 2007?

The same goes for Office X, Entourage X can't read those winmail.dat
files either.

I do use TNEF's Enough to read them.

Dropping the winmail.dat files into TNEF puts a pdf file on the
desktop.

Another step just to read that winmail.dat file.

Office for Mac is developed by the Macintosh Business Unit within
Microsoft. They are a completely different group from the one developing
Outlook for Windows. These groups have separate leadership, separate
budgets and separate goals.

And I dare say that the Outlook and Exchange Server development groups
don't hold compatibility with non-Microsoft solutions as one of their
higher goals.

I am having the same trouble opening Adobe PDF files sent to me. Entourage won't open them, because it sees them as winmail.dat files, even though my 10 year old pc opens the same email attachments file in outlook. does anyone have a fix for this. Will gates cure malaria before he can devise an email program that works?
