I'm not the one using words like "assclown". That would be you.
I'm confused. I didn't say you used it, I was just agreeing with the OP in
his assesment.
The point of any news group is to help others - and more specifically,
to teach others how to help themselves. It's frustrating to those who
volunteer their time to see people ask the same questions over and over,
day in and day out. It becomes obvious that these people aren't
searching very hard before asking - in many cases, it's obvious they
didn't bother to do even the simplest search.
Yeah, so, and? Welcome to the internet buddy, I've got news for ya: That's
never going to change. You know that as well as I do. I totally agree with
teh help someone help themselves but I don't get why you have to be an ass to
do that. Don't confuse "volunteering" your time with getting off on acting
condescending to others who are not as learned as yourself. There is a
difference. It's not like this same person came to you over and over asking
"dumb" questions.
In this case, a simple search for "winmail.dat" will tell you all you need to know. >People need to learn to help themselves. Otherwise, those who volunteer their time
here are just secretaries who look up answers for those who are not
skilled enough or are too lazy to look them up on their own.
Google searches are great but again, your first return could be from some
joker who knows not of what he speaks. What's wrong with throwing in a
google search link and ALSO maybe explaining (or linking the OP to an earlier
discussion on the same subject in the newsgroup) what your take is on it? If
everyone just did google searches I again ask WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT OF
NEWSGROUPS LIKE THIS ONE?
So you are the type of person who ignores all but the very first hit of
search results. This is good to know. It puts your posts in
perspective.
I won't expect any more from you in the future, given that you don't
bother to look that far.
Good Lord, one of those huh? Fine: I was only responding to your direct
statement that search return #1 told you all you need to know about
winmail.dat files. Yes, one of the sub links gives a very light description
of what's happening but ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW? Come on mon, that's what
newsgroups like this are for.
The fact remains if the OP had bothered to do a simple search, he'd have
answered his own question, and we wouldn't be having this discussion.
I'm not sure why you can't seem to get this simple point. Perhaps you
just don't think that far ahead.
And my still unanswered question is THEN WHAT IN THE HELLL IS THE PURPOSE OF
NEWSGROUPS LIKE THIS ONE? If everyone searches for everything you'd have NO
discussions. And guess what? The links you speak of, they point to people
asking the SAME question as the OP in this thread, you would have no links to
throw at people if there wasn't people asking "unnecessary" questions.
Yes, because there are so many *misleading* search results for
winmail.dat! Take this simple search for "winmail.dat":
Which pages do you believe? Oh the confusion! Boy.. you sure nailed it!
</sarcasm>
Oh brother, ok whatever. You don't get it and there's nothing I can say
that will make you get it.
BTW, I already know what winmail.dat files are. Anyone who has watched
the traffic here for more than a week, or anyone who bothers to search
for "winmail.dat" knows.
Hey congratulations! Way to go! Keep up the good work. You know about
winmail.dat files, woohoo!! Oh wait, that's right, you weren't the one with
teh question.
You are so right. But please... don't tell my boss. I'd hate for him to
find out! Surely he'd fire me! : X
Those comments by me were juvenile and unfair to you and I do apologize for
that.
I do wonder why people don't search before asking, because it happens so
frequently here.
I agree completely, I see that too much in other newsgroups I frequent. And
hey, I ranted on you for the attitude but at the same time I have to realize
that different people have different styles of helping. I just don't
understand the apparent need to put somone down in the name of "teaching"
them.
Or maybe it's just I expect others to hold themselves to the same
standards I follow - namely doing my best to find an answer on my own
before asking.
That's what I don't get. Why is it wrong to just ask people a question
directly? Again, it's not like you run a restaurant and people are coming up
to you all day and asking things like "how do I run a defrag on my puter?"
You're lurking in a computer newsgroup, where people come for the sole
purpose of asking questions...? I don't get the outrage when people ask what
you consider an unworthy or stupid question. That's all.
