I am so glad to have created this topic so that after 3 months we are still discussing this. I was disappointed initially with the first reply to my question. I had hoped something a bit more helpful would have been forthcoming. I did a search prior to logging into this news group that was supposed to be a resource. I found in google 143,000 references. Quite a few were bogus or wanted me to purchase something. After not getting the info that I needed. Which was "Why?" I called Microsoft. The winmail.dat files are created in the senders mail program. The reason rests with the software developers, for not having the proper relationship with one another to keep this from happening. My client was able to send me the file properly encoded using a different mail browser than he was originally.

The lesson here is be careful who you ask a question to. Not all people want to be helpful, Some are just to bitter. Just because they're titled "newsgroups" does not mean there is anything new there, or is a good reference point. But this has been entertaining & enlightening.

Maybe the creator of this "Newsgroup" needs to reevaluate its purpose & who is using it for what purpose.

See ya

Thanks for info.

Microsoft set up the newsgroup. There is no list mom on this group. Spam is
kept to a minimum on this group and in general most contributors give
helpful answers. Attitude comes from both sides. Many users post thinking
this is an official Microsoft support forum and we get the brunt of their
anger. Even long time contributors can get a bit frayed at times, but in
general this is a good list for finding helpful answers.

Non-Usenet newsgroups are possible and do occur, as private individuals or
organizations set up their own nntp servers. Examples include the newsgroups
