Winmail.dat

Joe

Hi,
I am using Windows 2000 Professional and Office 2000
Premium.
When sending word.doc file attachments, the recipiant
complains that he/she/they receive a file attachment
called "winmail.dat" and that they cannot open. When the
email and attachment is returned to me in full - even I
cannot open it.
What do I have to do to ensure that this stops from
happening again?
Thanks and Regards
Joe

Send your email messages in plain text format instead of Rich Text Format
(RTF)

Robert,

Thanks for the information, I have tried this and yes it
works, however, I wish to use the tool bar of "Rich Text
Format". Is there no other way to resolve this issue?

Thanks and Regards
Joe

No there's not, because what is happening is that the recipients who are
seeing the winmail.dat attachment are not using Outlook. Only Outlook users
can read RTF mail - it's a Microsoft standard which is not used by
non-Microsoft mail clients.

Actually, Eudora uses it as well.

How does Eudora use winmail.dat?
All I see when receiving such a message is a winmail.dat file in Eudora's
attachments directory.
Can Eudora open the winmail.dat file?
If so, how?

A

Alan Edwards

Milly,
Eudora doesn't use it. I have used Eudora for many years and this is
my standard reply to winmail.dat question:

If you mean a Winmail.dat then tell the person who is sending you
these with Outlook to uncheck the box :"Always send messages in
Microsoft Exchange rich text format."

I delete all winmail.dat files and ask the Outlook sender to change
from Rich Text to Plain Text.
I opened a few and found nothing of use inside.
This will open them if there is anything of use inside.

I never said it could read a winmail.dat file, only that Eudora CAN read
RTF.

Okay, we can play the KB game:
