WINPROJ.EXE still running after quiting Project Professional 2007

We are having an issue that often the winproj.exe process continues to run
after project professional has been closed. We have noticed this often stops
project professional from being able open the same server project afterwards
.... we get the project is still checked out error. I have verified that the
server queue shows the project checked in successfully. After we force the
process to quit, the server project opens ok. It could have something to do
with writing to the cache as we hae noticed if we wait a few minutes after
closing the project before we quite project professional, the process closes
correctly. Anyone seen this issue and have a fix or work around?

Have you applied the Infrastructure Update released in July to your system?
If so, I suspect that is what is going on. I do not believe this a bug, by
the way. This process guarantees that the the system can complete its
synchronization of data between the project stored in the Local Cache and
the project stored in the Project Server database. Hope this helps.

Dale I'm not sure how to check if the Infrastructure update has been appiled
or not? I can see that keeping the winproj.exe process running after closing
project professional to synchronize with the server makes sense. But whne
this happens the process never closes. I've left it all day and it never
closes. In fact the pc complains when you try to shut it down that
winproj.exe is still running. I can almost make this happen consistantly by
closing a project and immediately closing project professional. As I said if
I wait a few minutes before quitting project professional all is well. Seems
like a bug to me.

I thought you said that the Winprox.exe application closed after a few
minutes. If it stays open all day, then I suspect you are seeing a bug or
some problem with your installation of Microsoft Project 2007. To know if
the Infrastructure Update has been applied, you should contact your Project
Server administrator. He/she will know. Hope this helps.

I am the project administrator, although I am new to project server and
project prof ... so just doing the best I can.

I had installed the infrastructure updates for office servers and sharepoint
services, but hadn't installed it for the proj prof client. I have installed
it now on the client and the problem with winproj.exe still running has gone
away; it now closes a short while after quitting proj prof. Great I though
that will now solve the problem. But it didn't.

The real problem is when we try to open a project in proj pro it always says
the previous check is not complete. Doesn't matter if I click 'Retrieve the
list of all projects from Project Server' or not. The project also shows it
successfully checked in on the server. The only way we can open a project is
to clear the cache first in proj pro. Then it opens without an issue.

I thought winproj.exe still running was causing this problem. But now that
is fixed and the issue is still there. So must be some other sync/cache
issue. I'm thinking of writing a script that clears the cache evertime
project pro is launched.

Any ideas.

As a "newbie" to Project Server 2007, I would say you are doing well, my
friend! :) I'm glad to know that the Infrastructure Update solved at least
some of your problems. In regards to the other continuing problem, I would
suspect that the Local Cache on each user's PC hard drive is corrupted. To
resolve this problem, I would "blow away" the contents of the Local Cache on
each user's hard drive using the following steps:

1. Close Project Professional 2007.
2. From the Windows desktop, click Start - Run.
3. Enter the command %appdata% in the Run dialog.
4. In the Application Data dialog, navigate to the folder Microsoft\MS
Project\Cache.
5. Delete all of the folders and files in this directory.

The next time you attempt to open an enterprise project , you must use the
Retrieve the list of all projects from Project Server option in the Open
dialog. Let us know if this solves the problem.

Thanks Dale was worth a try but didn't help. After deleting the cache folder
the project opened fine. But then after saving and closing and trying to
reopen the same problem. We have to clera the caceh everytime we open a
project. By the way this happens on all projects not just one and the cache
is located in the default folder.
