Winword 2000 in Windows 2000 crashes imeddiatly after oppening ms

Winword 2000 in Windows 2000, for some periods crashes imeddiatly after
oppening,
displaying the message:
"Winword.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will
need to restart the program."

(in those periods all others office aplications and wordpad also crash the
same way).

And they keep like like this for some days. No use trying to "repair
office". It doesn't do any good.

In those days the only solution is to work with OpenOffice.

Then they will just return to normal as if nothing had happened. And will
work perfecly for a week or

two. Until they crash again.

Have installed all Win and Office updates. No good.

Has been like this for more than a year. Have also removed and reinstalled
office. Nothing changes.

Thank You very much for your help!

There's a generic fix for this: Close Word, make sure your Explorer View is
set to show all hidden files and extensions, search and find NORMAL.DOT and
delete every instance of that template file that you find. Restart Word and
it will be recreated with the default settings.

Mary:

I am encountering the same program as Mark. However, I don't know how to
"make sure Explorer View is set to show all hidden files and extensions".

I did a global search for Normal.dot on my hard drives, found 3 copies,
deleted them all but the problem is still occurring.

Thanks for your help!!

Thanks, Bob. I found it. Actually, I went to Control Panel, Folder Options,
View (I'm running Windows 2000). At this point, I'm running a search for
normal.dot including Advanced options for slow files.

I have found single copies of normal.dot but even after deleting them, the
problem still occurs. Any ideas?

I'm running McAfee virus scan and all of my Windows Updates are current.
Help!

You may wish to scan your system for malware also, AdawareSE and Spybot
S&D are a couple that can be used for free to remove "problem software".
