Winword 2003 still freezing

P

Pia

So far I haven't found anything regarding the problem
with word 2003. It is still freezing on us and only on
that one computer. I was also playing with the settings
of Norton AV but nothing helped. I disconnected all
applications that download information from the
internet on their own, thinking that may be their processes
running in the background might cause the error, it didn't
help.
Isn't there anybody out there who has an idea what this
could be?

Thanks,

Pia

The same computer produced today another error.
While my colleague was working on it the machine
shut down and rebooted. When looking up the event
log I found the following event properties:

Source: Save Dump
Category: None
Type: Information
Event ID: 1001
User N/A
Computer: [name we gave the computer]
Description:: "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck
was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0xa0094ef4, 0x0000001, 0x0010a258).
Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in C:\Winxp\
Memory Dump.

(end quote of event properties)

I tried to look up the error in the knowledge base. Bugcheck 0x000001e
returns a result but with an exception code that isn't in here.

I don't know what to do anymore, I'm not even sure anymore if this
is a word problem or may be a windows problems.

I really, really would appreciate some info.

Thank you,

Pia

Hi Pia,

If you could pinpoint what is happening when it hangs it would help us help you troubleshoot the issue.

Are you printing? Typing? Spell-check? The more details you can provide the better. :).

Hi Beth,

I couldn't find any pattern so far.
It happens when she's typing, sometimes when she leaves the
machine alone with one or two files opened to answer the
phone.
It never happens when she starts up the application or within
the first 5-10 minutes of working at it.
It can happen when she prints, but it doesn't happen regularly
when she prints.
Sometimes saving a file seems to be triggering it.
But it does not do it always when she saves, only sometimes,
and it happens, too when she's not saving anything.
She is very conscious about not having any other applications
(like e-mail or so) open when she's working in word.

I've got the same problem. While typing, Word 2003 hangs inexplicably and
the hourglass shows up...after a few seconds, it goes away...I type some
more, then the hourglass appears again. I've tried the following remedies to
no avail:

1. deleted all normal.dot files
2. typed winword /regserver at the run command to rebuild the registry keys
3. disabled all "save" boxes in word
4. used Cntrl key when I started Word - no change
5. uninstalled then reinstalled office three times
6. checked all running processes.....disabled them one by one...rebooted
after each was disabled...no change

This is a very frustrating problem as it not only affects Word, the hanging
problem affects Outlook because I use Word as my email editor.

If it means anything, my system consists of the following -

Pentium IV (3.0)
120 GB Serial ATA HD (Hard disk is partitioned....about 75 gigs (for
programs) on C:\ and 40 gigs (for work files) on D:\
ATI 9600 Pro Video Card (128 mb)
18" LCD (Dell) monitor
3 gigs of dual channel 400 mHz ddr
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card
Windows XP Professional (SP2)
No network
All hardware and programs have the latest drivers or updates installed and
the machine is defragged once a week. I also use Spy Blaster, Spybot Search
and Destroy, and NOD 32 Antivirus several times a week. I have a router and
a software firewall installed. Also, I'm been using computers for about 20
years and would consider myself fairly knowledgeable with OS and applications
but this one has me stumped. Any ideas because I'm getting tired of
uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2003?

Hello Bill,

You are not alone!! I have the same problem. I can open Word, but as soon as
I type one letter, it freezes and I have to restart the compu. Very
frustrating. We have all current updates for Office and have cleaned the
compu of all files no longer needed, did a scan disc, virus scan, spy ware
scan etc etc. I have exhausted all avenues. Hopefully MS will come up with a
solution, BUT, what do we do in the mean time??

This has nothing to do with Microsoft as such: more likely it is a corrupt
printer driver or normal.dot. See the following:
