Winword Error - have tried everything!

Hi,
I have read and re-read the discussion in relation to winword and have
researched the net as well with no luck. I have a customer with winxp pro,
completely upto date. Installed is Microsoft Office 2000, completely updated
as well. I have tried all the suggestions on this topic including all the
links. I have tried: Deleting normal.dot, renaming the registry key: My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.x\Word, where x.x is
the version of word. I have found and deleted all .tmp files, I have tried
starting word in safemode, I have replaced the mso9.dll faulting module from
cd to hard drive. Nothing seems to work, as soon as I start word, either
normal or in safemode I cannot do anything as I get the error message. It
won't even start when the entire pc is in safe mode. Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated, as I have said I have gone over the discussions relating
to this and tried all of the suggestions and links. It's not on a network
and the printer drivers are on the actual machine, hence it's not sharing
anything. At this stage I'm tearing my hear out because I can't even see
what template it's using to start up.

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326510 "You receive a
"Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close"
error message when you try to start Word 2000". By the way, it
would help us to help you if you quoted the error message you
see, because we can't see your screen from here.

Oh my god!!!!! thank you so much, that solved the problem, why have I not
seen this link on the discussions before, nobody mentioned this, hopefully
other people can now see this and solve their problems too. I don't know why
the compatibility mode was checked on winword but unchecking it solved the
problem. This kb didn't even turn up when I searched Microsoft either, I
have spent at least a day trying all sorts of things, I'll never forget this
one.
Thanks ver much.

Did you run CHKDSK and defrag?, delete internet cache, cookies and history, or
create a new user account and open word from there?

If it doesn't actually start, it is usually either a corrupt normal.dot or a
corrupt printer driver.
