All of a sudden when I open Word 2003 I get an error indicating that MS
Office Word has encountered a problem and must close. The error signature
includes Offset Code 008dd26c. I have tried deleting normal.dot, repairing
MS Word, uninstalling MS Word and reinstalling MS Word. The problem
persists. Word does open in Safe Mode or when ron with the /a switch, but
the next time I open Word I get the error message again.

Does anyone know what this Offset Code means or how to fix this problem?

Herb,
the link you reference doesn't work. Is it correct? Any other ideas? I too
just experienced this problem. Word 2003 has been working fine up until this
morning when I installed the latest Office Security Updates.

HELP!!!!!

FBOL,

I had the same problem and fixed it by searching my computer for the
"normal.dot" template file and deleting it.

Hope this helps you.

Very odd. That link has worked forever. It appears that it might've been
renamed:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm

Or, more generally:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/ApplicationErrors.htm

The usual course of action is to try opening Word using the /a switch. If
that then lets Word start, the problem usually is one of the following:

1. Corrupted normal.dot. Rename or delete this file. Word will create a new
one.

2. Corrupted registry entries. The Data and Options keys are often culprits.

3. Misbehaving add-ins. Check in Word's startup folder... also, check
Tools - Templastes and Add-ins.

The articles on word.mvps.org can help focus you and guide you through the
finer points of troubleshooting.

It's an excellent rewrite too. I've noted the new name and URL too.

I got that too, on my new computer at work... (with word 2003)
(After surfing for the answer) I deleted normal.dot, and I was back in
business.

BUT
I triggered the error a few times, and then I saw the connection:
I made my own keyboard shortcut for "dash". (Since I didn't have a numeric
keyboard, I couldn't use the Ctrl+- command.) I used Alt+z instead, if that's
of any interest...

So now word is working fine as long as I don't make any personal keyboard
shortcuts... *sigh* - And I really could use that dash close at hand...
