Emily,

If the file opens successfully on other machines, and you are not attempting
to open the file over a network (copy it locally & try if you are) then the
issue is machine specific. A fast way to trouble shoot this is by starting
word using the /a switch to suppress add-ins from loading and starting Word
in a generic state.

Please see the below article for more information:

Larry,
The file is local on my computer. I tried to start word with the /a option
and the problem still there when I open the file.

Emily,

Since the file opens successfully on other computers, we know the issue is
machine specific. Troubleshooting this will be time consuming. First
begine by starting Windows in Safe Mode - if it works, then go to Start\Run
and entery "msconfig". In there you will see a Startup sheet tab. Deselect
all items and restart. If it works, go to the Startup sheet tab and begin
selecting a couple boxes, restart & test, add a couple boxes, restart &
test, etc. Through a process of elimination you will hopefully find the
offending application. If there is no difference, you will need to compare
installed applications, versions, updates, etc. to a machine that can
successfully opne the document to identify what is different. Could this be
a version\open converter issue?

If all else fails, you may want to try choosing "Recover Text from Any File
(*.*)" under the "Files of Type" drop down from the File\Open dialog box in
Word. Using this converter will remove
formatting.
