winword.exe causes problem for disk on key

When I try to disconnect the usb disc on key I get a warning that I
can't disconnect now. If I open the task manager and manually close
the winword.exe, I can safely disconnect.
Is it only me?
If not, what causes that?
Why does winword.exe works even after closing all word windows?
How can I prevent this?

Thanx!

I believe if you use Word as your email editor in Outlook, an instance of
Word will still be running as long as Outlook is open.

As Suzanne says, never work directly with any type of removable media. Word
creates many temp files in the active folder and if this is on REM media, it
has 2 problems; the REM media is far slower than your normal hard disk
drive; space may become a problem because Word creates temp files for many
operations, such as copy/paste and on Save to create the file format
correctly, etc. Many of these temp files are not deleted until after Word
closes. Pulling the REM media before the OS is ready can lock up the OS or
even worse, the document may become corrupt.

So the message is to always save or open from the HDD and only ever copy
to/from the REM media.
