WINWORD.exe error (working w/Headings)

When editing headings in Word docs, I frequently get
WINWORD.exe errors:

[WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error
log is being created.]

This problem is reproducible, and consistently happens
when working with headings. I have not yet located a fix
on the Microsoft site. Suggestions or a location for this
troubleshoot?
