WINWORD.EXE Errors When Computer is not Online

When I try to read a document from my hard drive and my computer is not connected to the internet, the message "WINWORD.EXE" has generated errors and will be closed by Windows".
If I am connected to the interenet, I have no problems opening the files, even though these files are on my hard drive
Has anybody ever heard of this before
I have tried reinstalling Office 2000 and have updated all the latest service packs
