Winword.exe has generated errors.

I have a user who is receiving the error
message "winword.exe has generated errors and will be
closed". I have tried several things to remedy this. (Note-
it only occurs with certain documents in word).

1. I renamed normal.dot and restarted word
2. I uninstalled and reinstalled office
3. I applied office updates

Nothing seems to be working, and it is not consistent so I
have no way of knowing when it might happen.
Any other suggestions for this error message?

Hi Laura,

What version of Word are you using and what patches are installed?

Precisely when does the error occur? Printing? Opening? Saving?
Typing?

Using Word 2000. Installed Office Service Pack 1a.
This occurs when the document is open and a change is
trying to be made.

Thanks!

Hi Laura,

Does the error occur if you start Word using the /a switch? Go to
Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If not then it could be a macro stored in a global template/add-in
created by a third party creating the error.

To determine if you are using any global templates go to
Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global templates
or add-ins listed. If so they are located in one of your Startup
folders. The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder can be
found in the Office installation path..

Take a look in each folder and if you find more than one file move
them one at a time and try duplicating the error after each file is
moved out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

Otherwise, does the error occur if you start Windows in Safe Mode?
