winword has caused an error in winword.exe

Donna

This is the message I get whenever I do the following:

File
Open
New

and click on the only choice I have under the General Tab
which is normal.old. My only other choice is web page.

Here's the message...."Winword has caused an error in
winword.exe Winword will now close." Then poof - i'm
dropped from Word.

Any clues?

Thanks. At the moment the only way around it is to use an
existing file, delete the contents and then save it as a
new filename. Kinda a pain.

I just installed Microsoft Office 2000 professional hoping
that would solve my problem, but no luck.

Thanks in advance!

It would appear that you may have renamed Normal.dot with file extensions
hidden, so what you ended up with was Normal.old.dot. I'm not surprised that
Word got so confused by that that it failed to create a new Normal.dot. You
need to view this file in Windows Explorer with file extensions displayed
and rename it Normal.old. Or, without file extensions displayed, rename it
Oldnormal (which will be Oldnormal.dot). Then restart Word, and a new
Normal.dot should be created, which will give you back your Blank Document
option.
